There are 3 main ways to finish an exterior household surface:-

CLEAR FINISHING
Clear Finishing or 'Coating' preserves the natural colour and grain pattern of the timber, while adding protection against wear, dirt, weather, etc.

Points to consider before choosing to Clear Finish

Some things to consider...

  • Existing discolouration or damage to the timber will still be visible.
  • Requiring regular maintenance Clear Finishing is not recommended for rough sawn timber. Surfaces to be coated should be thoroughly sanded.
  • Clear Finishing with products such as Estapol Exterior Clear is usually only suitable for new timber or timber otherwise in good condition.
  • The life of a clear finish can be greatly enhanced by the application of an exterior stain e.g. Forestwood, before clear coating.

STAINING
Staining preserves and enhances the grain of the timber, maintaining the "natural" look while protecting the timber.

Points to consider before choosing to Stain.

Some things to consider...

  • Recommended for new or previously stained timber and may be appliew to rough sawn timber.
  • Staining is not recommended over previously painted surfaces.
  • Stained timber will generally require less maintenance than clear coated timber, but still requires somes upkeep.
PAINTING
Solid cover painting, whether by acrylic or enamel, is generally recommended for all timber surfaces, new or old. For exterior surfaces, a high quality 100% acrylic such as Wattyl Solagard Plus will provide the ultimate in exterior durability and ease of maintenance. It will add colour and life to almost any surface whilst allowing the natural texture of the surface to show through. Other specialised Wattyl exterior finishes such as Fence Finish, Decking Finish and Garden Furniture Finish offer similar advantages but are formulated especially for the surface designated
