Propex® Geotextiles Improve Subgrade/Roadbase Performance

As anyone who has dug up and repaired a failed road knows, loss of roadbase support due to subgrade soil contamination is the leading cause of failure.

This contamination can happen quickly over soft or wet soils, but still develops even over competent subgrades. Once some of the original road structural section is lost to contamination, the road progressively fails, due to inadequate support for the traffic loading.

When placed at the subgrade/roadbase interface, Propex geotextiles provide four functions to enhance roadway performance: separation, stabilization, reinforcement and drainage.

AASHTO M 288, the national guideline specification for geotextiles in transportation applications, recommends woven and nonwoven geotextiles for separation and stabilization. Our woven geotextile styles 2002, 2004 and 2006, and our nonwoven styles 4547, 4551 and 4553 meet the separation/stabilization geotextile recommendations of AASHTO M 288. Our premium woven styles 2016, 2019, 2033 and 2044, or our nonwoven style 4510, are available for applications requiring more critical drainage and reinforcement.

As demonstrated by our Roadways And Civil Engineering (R.A.C.E.) software, our Propex® geotextiles can increase the life and eliminate 30%
or more of the required aggregate thickness in an unpaved
road or other unpaved surface such as a storage yard or construction pad.

Using AASHTO 1993 flexible pavement design methods, the software also allows a reduction in the structural section thickness of pavements and/or can greatly increase the pavement service life. Geotextile enhancement may be applied over subgrade soil strengths ranging from very soft (CBR<1 %) to even hard (CBR 8% or greater).
